Good Friday and Unity

Two themes emerged in prayer this morning. The first was a celebration and a recognition that today is Good Friday. In church tradition, today we recognize the sacrificial death of Jesus. Remembering the violence of Jesus' death (specifically splinters in a flogged back) made it so much easier for me to come to grips with the real and sinister nature of my own sin. Confession becomes easier and more authentic in the face of the sacrifice that defines our faith.

The other theme was unity. I came across a Moravian vow in the Red Moon Rising;
In essentials: unity.
In non-essentials; liberty.
And in all things; love.
Is there any better prayer for what we are doing here? Is there any stronger call to Christian unity at the U of I? Isn't the cross a profound reminder to us of just what unifies us all? Aren't we unified in that essential?
